The method for finding a new job in changing. In the past, you typically waited for a position to be advertised, applied directly, and waited to see if you were selected. Now it is much more common for recruiters to actively search for the right candidates. Tools like LinkedIn and other job sites allow them to proactively search for candidates who meet their needs. But, the question is, are you even on a recruiter’s radar?

If you don’t have your profiles set up properly, you may be missing out on the opportunities this new paradigm affords. To make sure you are being found for the right reasons, here are some tips to help you stand out from the crowd.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn has become the standard in professional profiles. To get the most out of the opportunities it may have to offer; you need to make sure your profile doesn’t get lost amongst the hundreds of thousands of other users.

Start with your professional headline. This prime piece of real estate can do more than simply list your current or last job title. Use it to express the value you will provide to a company. You also want to make sure it speaks to the kind of job you are looking for, and not just what you have done.

While photos on a resume are taboo, your LinkedIn profile needs a professional photo. A standard headshot will suffice as long as you are dressed appropriately for the industry in which you work.

Use your summary as a general cover letter. Review your accomplishments and let recruiters know the kind of problems you can help them solve. It is appropriate to inject some personality into the summary section, so let it give hints to who you are as a person.

You position descriptions and skills should be full of keywords for which recruiters are looking. Include key competencies as well as individual skills, such as relevant software knowledge. If you are currently unemployed, add a job entry describing your ideal new position. That way, if a recruiter searches the “current title” field, your profile will show up. List the company as “seeking new opportunities” to make it clear that this is where you want to be in the future.

Job Boards

Recruiters will also search job boards for suitable candidates. Make sure your profile is complete, and that your resume is attached (when applicable). Keep the information current and use techniques similar to those mentioned for LinkedIn. Keywords and industry jargon can increase your odds of being found when recruiters look for candidates.

You also may need to take an extra step. Not all job boards default to having your profile set to be searchable. If you don’t have the correct setting in place, no one will ever see your information in searches.
