Two years ago I came to Contemporary Personnel Staffing looking for my first job out of college. The job market for recent college grads took a very hard hit in the summer of 2008, and it was tough to find something. After being on a couple of interviews and turning down a couple of opportunities that I knew I wouldn’t like, I came to Contemporary Personnel Staffing for assistance in finding a job. After interviewing with one of our administrative recruiters here at CPS, I was hired for an internal position.
As first jobs go, I couldn’t imagine anything better. Every day is so different and the variety teaches you many different things. Two years ago when I first started, I thought I was just going to be in customer service: answering the phones with a “happy” voice and sending out emails to potential candidates. After two months on the job I knew that we don’t just provide customer service, we truly engage our clients and provide them with the service they need. In this position I have the opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of the people we place and clients we find great people for.
I spend up to fifteen hours a week out of the office on-site with one of our largest clients. As a Manufacturing Recruiting Assistant, I found out first hand that you need to fully understand the environment of the company you’re staffing for, as well as the management that will be in charge of your candidates. We do our best to fully understand the culture and environment of each to make sure we’re making the best fit for all parties involved. It makes it much easier to send the right person that is going to match that supervisor’s personality and the company’s culture. This has helped me with the recruiting process with every company that I have had the pleasure of working with so far. It sounds like common sense to get to know your customers really well, but you’d be surprised at how many companies skip this very important step!
It is very unrealistic for most recruiters to spend 5 hours out of the office let alone 15. But if you can take the extra time to really get to know the companies you will be working with, it makes for a higher success rate. We have set up extra meetings with direct supervisors, took many detailed tours and asked a lot of questions throughout the process. It is a process that works, and it has helped build our company’s reputation for quality.
It is vital for any recruiter to see the environment where they are sending their candidates. Understanding the environment and the culture of your clients is the first step to creating a great partnership. This kind of relationship can ensure the repeat business that all recruiters crave. At CPS, we make the extra effort to get to know our clients and work towards giving them the best service possible.
